Our guide to different types of heels that everybody needs

There are many different types of heels that you can pick from to pair with women’s clothing to make the perfect outfit. Deciding on the right pair of heels can be difficult because there are so many types of heels. Fret no more, though, as our helpful guide can help you choose the right types of heels for you and your outfit.

Different types of heels

Whatever the social event you’re planning for, it’s a good idea to have an understanding of the different types of heels before choosing ones that suit your outfit of choice. There are various types of heels (often too many to choose from!) but we’ve listed a selection below to help you better understand the choices available to you.

  • Stiletto
  • Block
  • Kitten
  • Ankle strap
  • Mules
  • Platform
  • Corset
  • Cone

Stiletto heels

Stiletto heels are a classic style and probably the most well-known name for types of heels. Stilettos can range in height from one to 10 inches, giving you extra height and lengthening your legs.

These types of heels, like these Lace Up Perspex Strap Square Toe Stiletto Heels, can be a perfect combination for a cocktail dress.

Block heels

Block heels are chunky and can have a square or cylindrical appearance. The shape of the heel distributes weight evenly, making them one of the more comfortable types of heels on the market. Block heels work great with a variety of outfits, like jeans, skirts and silhouette dresses.

Because of their comfort in comparison to other types of heels, block heels are a good choice if you know you’re going to be spending a lot of time on your feet.

Kitten heels

Kitten heels are a great option when looking for low impact heels to wear with a slip dress or denim. They’re a short stiletto that work well with a wide range of dresses for women, as well as office attire. These Gourmet Square Toe Low Heels would work well with denim jeans.

Ankle strap heels

The key to ankle strap heels are in the name. These moderate-to-high heeled women’s shoes feature a strap that wraps around the ankle and fastens with a clasp, tie or buckle.

Ankle straps are versatile types of heels, but the straps around the ankle and calf area can make your legs appear shorter, so if you’re a little on the short side, try and avoid these if you can!

Mules

Mules are a type of backless shoe that pair best with summer dresses and midi skirts. Due to their backless design, mules heels are slip-on and come in a wide variety of styles, textures and heights.

These Caged Buckle Detail Square Toe Stiletto Heels would be great for your next social occasion.

Platform heels

Platform heels, like these Platform Block Heels, provide height to the whole shoe, rather than just the heel. The bigger the platform, the shorter the heel will feel, making walking easier than in traditional types of heels.

Heels of this type can be worn with cocktail dresses, maxi dresses and jeans. They’re great if you’re aiming to add extra height to your look but want to feel a little more comfortable than you would in stilettos, for example.

Corset heels

Corset heels are a striking pair of shoes that come in a range of variations. They feature corseting up the front of the foot and ankle joint, effectively becoming a corset for your foot. These types of heels pair well with clothing like mini skirts, bodycon dresses, and little black dresses. If you’re looking for an attention-grabbing pair of shoes, corset heels are the way to go.

Cone heels

The final type of heels we’re focusing on are cone heels, which feature an ice cream-cone style shape. The broader part of the heel connects to the heel’s body and tapers to a thinner area at the tip. Cone heels can work well with loose-fitting, flowy dresses.
